March 2016 - Now

Working full time at Mayden

Job title: DevOps Engineer

Role involves:

  • supporting staff with all in-house IT systems
  • supporting staff with laptop issues
  • supporting ingoing datacenter operations

History

I have been at Mayden for 9 year's, in this time I have helped to move office twice. This has involved setting up the new office with internet access and networking, both wired and WiFi using Unifi. Decommissioning the old office and removing all IT related kit.

I have overseen the migration of our colo datacenter operations into a private cloud provider, then from private cloud to AWS. Both migrations have allowed us to expand our capability's, both in terms of building new infrastructure and modernising our tooling.

Managing all the virtual servers, supporting staff with laptop issues.

As a Systems engineer the role covers all aspects of managing all servers, from building new networking, the servers and installing services such as PHP and MySQL. Managing users on servers, adding new staff and removing leavers

The systems Mayden provide are to the NHS, as such there is a high level of security build into the networking. When planning new applications how that will interact with current applications and what other security may need to be added.

In this roll I have helped migrate our entire virtual estate from Colo to a Cloud provide and then onto AWS, the first move involved the use of zerto to move our vmware servers to a company called UKCloud. The second move is a mix of lift and shift to AWS and build new database servers in AWS and stretch our Galera clusters into AWS with minimal downtime. The second move has also introduced terraform and Github actions for CI/CD.
